“Unique to Oregon, ¡Salud! is a collaborative effort founded in 1991 by a group of winery owners and physicians in an attempt to support the community of vineyard workers. A project of OHSU Health Hillsboro Medical Center, ¡Salud! addresses the healthcare hurdles these workers regularly encounter. The program now serves approximately 2,500 patients each year, and all vineyard workers and family members in the Willamette Valley are eligible to participate.”
“This is the first part of these vineyard employees’ afternoon with ¡Salud!, a one-of-its-kind preventative health care service supported exclusively by Oregon’s winemaking community. ¡Salud! was founded in 1991 by Tuality Healthcare and a handful of producers concerned about how their seasonal workforce could gain access to basic healthcare, since they are not eligible for employer-sponsored plans due to the temporary nature of their work.”
“Since May 7, ¡Salud! has screened 400 farmworkers for Covid-19, with roughly four percent testing positive. (Only two have been hospitalized thus far and both are recovering at home.) Leda Garside, chief nurse at ¡Salud!, estimates that roughly 70 percent of the vineyard workers she sees do not have any other healthcare.”

“For the past 25 years, non-profit organization ¡Salud! has provided multi-lingual, multicultural health care to the people who work in Oregon’s vineyards — in wineries, tending vines, harvesting grapes, and bottling.”
‘”Ever thought about the labor that goes into making a bottle of wine? What about the stresses that labor puts on workers? If you haven’t, you should.” – Mark Stock, The Manual
With sustainability becoming more of a focus for wineries, topics such as land and water use are often at the forefront of the discussion. Mark Stock’s recent article via TheManual.com features ¡Salud! and care for vineyard workers in other regions of the country as part of the sustainability movement, urging readers to consider the impact on agricultural workers.

“That stress of living in this uncertainty, it adds a lot,” she said. “You were promised one thing and went from one area of hope and now we are in an area of, we don’t know. That creates a lot of stress, and that stress is reflected physically.” – Leda Garside, RN, MBA, ¡Salud! Services Manager
Thank you to VICE Magazine reporter Emily Gillespie and photographer Toni Greaves for accompanying ¡Salud! Services to a mobile health clinic in the summer of 2018.
